Risk Assessment Workshop - Training

Who should attend: Any staff member with the responsibility of controlling hazards. This course will enable students to carry out their own risk assessments and hazard audits so that policies, procedures and control measures can be implemented.

Duration: 1 Day 

Training Objectives
:

  • Gain an understanding of health and safety law in regard to risks assessment
  • Appreciate the legal duties of employers and employees and the corporate responsibilities for contractors, agency personnel, visitors and others
  • Gain a sound practical appreciation of how to carry out risk assessments, including the use of accident investigations
  • Be introduced to practical work place tools that delegates will use when they return to their individual work places e.g. check sheets and risk assessment matrixes

Method of Training: The course includes classroom presentation using videos and Powerpoint presentations, followed by real life risk assessments where students will build safe systems of work, method statements and consider special issues such as personal protective equipment (PPE) and training needs. Delegates will be encouraged to discuss their own workplace experiences and begin to assess existing measures to control any hazards with balance and measure.Handouts and all necessary materials are provided for students and signed training records maintained.

Certificate in SAFETY and HEALTH at WORK (FETAC Module D20165)

Who should attend: Persons requiring a foundation level training in Occupational Health and Safety, particularly those who have such a responsibility in their place of work. It is designed to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to promote and maintain safety and health in their working environments, and should in general serve to adequately provide the training and knowledge elements required of a competent person (as defined by the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005).

NOTE: This is a mandatory module of the National Vocational Certificate in Community Care, in Childcare Studies and in Security Studies and an elective module for other National Vocational Certificate courses.

Objectives: To ensure that learners who successfully complete this course:

  • will understand the concepts of safety and health,
  • will recognise the factors which influence health, safety and welfare,
  • will be able to apply health and safety principles and procedures,
  • will understand the critical importance of hazard identification and risk assessment,
  • will be familiar with core legislation in the area of safety, health and welfare,
  • will promote safe working practices and procedures in their place of work and elsewhere.

Subjects covered:Introduction, explanation of course requirements & possibilities, overview of Health & Safety, Health and Safety legislation, responsibilities of employers and employees, communication, consultation and training requirements, role of HSA, hazards & risk assessments, Safety Statements, factors promoting health and safety, controlling risks & promoting safety, housekeeping, slips, trips or falls, environment, work practices, working at height, disability, safety culture, accident investigation, chemicals, waste disposal, protection of the environment, use of respiratory equipment & other PPE, electricity, work equipment, warning signs, machinery, noise, vibration, work equipment, fire safety, cause of accidents and emergencies, fumes, dust, hot working, confined spaces, reporting, investigating, preventive action, first aid, manual handling, ergonomics, posture, VDU, asthma, dermatitis, absenteeism, human risk factors, stress, bullying, harassment, violence, drugs and alcohol, Employee Assistance Programmes, lifestyle, diet, health promotion etc., personal & food hygiene, symptoms & causes of ill health, preventing illness, construction industry safety, transport safety, road safety, control of Contractors.

Entry Requirements:While there are no specific entry requirements, learners should preferably have Leaving Certificate, National Vocational Certificate Level 1 or equivalent qualifications and/or relevant life and work experiences. All prospective candidates must submit a completed Training Application Form (form DL1) and pay the course fee before they can be accepted onto the course.

Assessments: In accordance with >FETAC regulations, each learner will be assessed on the evidence of:

  • Assignments (2) accounting for 60% of total marks (practical-based, to be completed in student's own time)
  • Examination accounting for 40% of total marks (theory-based)

Awards: Each participant will receive a Certificate from Daralinn Health and Safety on successfully completing the course and passing the assessment requirements (see above). The FETAC Record of Achievement will be issued following their validation of results and the appropriate credit under the National Framework of Qualifications will then be obtained by student.

National Framework of Qualifications: Course qualifies as 1 credit towards FETAC (level 5) Certificates and is a recognised module within the NFQ.

Presenters: Delivered by qualified trainers all of whom have had extensive practical experience in the management of Safety and Health in general and have specialised expertise in a variety of occupations.

Duration / Times: 1 night / week for 12 weeks, from 19.00h to 22.00h each night>(Examination is held last night of course - see Assessments).

FIRE (Or SAFETY) WARDEN TRAINING

Who should attend: Appointed Fire/Safety Wardens. Those having responsibility for emergency evacuation of premises.

Duration: 1 day (09.00 to 16.30 h)

Presenters: Delivered by professionally qualified Occupational Health and Safety practitioner(s) who have had practical experience as Fire Officers

  • Understanding fire
  • The role of the Fire Warden
  • Preventing fire
  • Minimising risks if fire breaks out
  • Fighting a small fire (includes practical exercise) 

EMPLOYEE TRAINING in SAFETY AWARENESS

Who should attend: All new employees and any existing staff who have not previously received health and safety training.

Duration: ½ day

Training Objectives: On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify their responsibilities with regard to Health & Safety in the workplace
  • Understand the importance of communication between management and employees
  • Identify the hazards and risks applicable to their workplace
  • Understand the importance and their role in the Company Safety Statement

Course Details: Training will cover the following topics:

  • Employee responsibilities defined by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 and the applicable General Application Regulations (incl. Personal Protective Equipment Regulations)
  • Employees role in hazard identification and risk assessment
  • Employees role in accident reporting and investigation.

Method of Training: The course includes classroom presentation and discussion. Videos, Powerpoint presentations and discussions are used during the course. It can be run either at clients premises (providing suitable facilities are available) or in the Wexford Training Centre. Handouts and all necessary materials are provided for students and signed training records maintained.
