Manual Handling Instructor Training

Who should attend: Those intending to act as in-company instructors for manual handling training of staff.

Duration: 5 days.

Maximum number to attend: 10

Presenters: Delivered by a qualified Manual Handling Instructor (who is also a qualified trainer and a Corporate Member of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health) and a registered physiotherapist with a background in training.

Details: This programme conforms to the current guidelines of the Health and Safety Authority in regard to Manual Handling training. It gives trainees both a comprehensive knowledge of manual handling and of how to instruct others. It is an intensive course while at the same time being highly interactive and flexible to the needs of individual participants. The course content includes:

  • Legislation and the legal aspects of manual handling
  • Instructional skills (this module continues throughout the training)
  • Anatomy and the physiology of work activities
  • Risks due to manual handling and how to assess them correctly
  • Safe lifting and moving techniques, including practical work
  • Biomechanics
  • Fitness and flexibility
  • Risk assessment (practical by participants)
  • Training presentations by participants (which are constructively reviewed)
  • Planning, preparing and scheduling of training programmes
  • Examination (includes both written and practical)

Manual Handling Training

Who should attend: Any person involved in lifting items in the course of their working day, and indeed everyone who wants to know how to carry out physical work at minimum risk to their bodies.

Duration: 3 Hours

Presenters: Delivered by qualified Manual Handling Instructors.

Details: This course is designed to train people in correct posture and in lifting techniques for moving an item. The course is part theory, part visual and part practice. Question and answer session to show techniques involved in lifting specific items.

Objectives: To recognise a load which is too heavy or awkward to move
To learn the correct technique for lifting
To handle, move or carry a load safely
To maintain the safety of others
To avoid injury

Awards: The certificate awarded complies with current Health and Safety Legislation and it is recommended to be repeated at least every three years.
